Finding a concept such as the « Hood Watch » could seem totally ingenious (at least for the mothers of the founders of “Revelation”) but you have to know that these types of interesting ideas or crazy concepts are very common within the walls of the design offices, both in-house watch brands and freelance studios. Actually, finding innovative concepts is the easiest thing to do in the “design to production” process.
Then the going gets tough! (For details please keep reading the next 23 chapters!!!)
Now starts a long and difficult journey. The first step before the aesthetical creation is the conceptual research. The designer normally is responsible for this phase,
but not always… I know a watch brand owner who sent me by fax, when I designed as a freelancer, between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, his conceptual sketches, which were absolutely fantastic to help me visualize his ideas in order for me to interpret them for the creation phase.
No doubt this guy is the real creator of the models of his brand and deserves to put his name on the dials!
So, in this chapter, this is what we are talking about.
Attached, you can discover the very first conceptual sketch of what would later become the R01.
You can see that the hood is already fixed on the case and that its purpose is already to activate something in order to make the mysterious appearance of the movement.
The case is square (old demons from the past) and some transparent dial, which becomes opaque, is mentioned.
But at that moment, neither Olivier nor I had a solution as how to reveal to the movement. We didn’t even know what kind of movement to put in our watch.
The only thing that we imagined for sure is that the hood would play a technical part by interacting with the case. It would activate something through a waterproof sarcophagus.
Indeed this is our next crucial point.
If in the 17th century, it was very common to open one’s ”savonette watch” to see the movement (what do you think? Everything has already been done in watchmaking), in the 21st century no client would accept to buy a watch that would not be waterproof.
