So… the idea is: to build a watch brand, which will allow two designers to make a decent living thanks to their uncompromising creations.
Right then, the first step now consists in finding THE idea, which will make them rich and famous.
In all my previous jobs, every time the design team imagined a new product, one of the old guys, usually in the technical department, always found out a way to place this infamous sentence «« So and so » already did this years ago! But, what did you expect? Everything has been done in watchmaking. ».
Well, I must admit that this statement is right most of the time and it is a real challenge to find something that has not yet been invented since the dawn of watchmaking, four hundred years ago.
One of the ways to find new ideas (according our Art Center College of Design methodology) is to start by observing the environment and doing researches, well before even thinking about drawing a single line on a piece of paper.
So, that’s what Olivier and I did.
Attached is our interpretation of the world of watchmaking when we began our brainstorming in 2007. It is the very starting point of our reflexions, which will lead to the original concept of the brand “Revelation”.
For us, the world of high-end watchmaking was divided in two groups: The “Great Tradition” and the “Crazy Overtaking Technologies” mainly lead by some independent pioneers. These new pioneers understood very well that the mechanics of their pieces were worth showing. They therefore gave access to the inside of their watches. Often however these creations – known as “UFO’s” – had to sacrifice the primary function of the watch – which was to clearly indicate the hour and the minute.
Olivier and I had an intuition that there would be a place for a product that could combine both qualities of theses two worlds: a timeless and readable watch that carries all the patrimony values of watchmaking which will give, at the same time, access to its inner beauty: the movement. Just like for sports cars: the proud owner can lift the hood of his toy to let his friends admire its powerful engine, but once the hood is closed the purity of the bodywork remains.
That’s it, guys! We found our concept! We just have to create the Hood Watch!
Great! This is it: our UNIQUE and innovative idea is just born!
