Swiss watchmaking in October 2010

Performance in October was equivalent to the average for previous months. Watch exports recorded monthly growth of 18.0% compared to October 2009, reaching a value of 1.6 billion francs. After ten consecutive months of growth, the branch improved slightly on its result at the same period of 2007, with growth of 20.6% against January-October 2009.

Wristwatches by materialsThe value of sales of watches in all materials, except for the other metals category, rose in October. In terms of the number of pieces, steel watches set the tone with a gain of 200,000 units on October 2009. The “other materials” category recorded a very steep increase. Since the beginning of the year, watch companies have exported 20.7 million watches, 3.5 million more than in 2009

Wristwatches by price categories

October was particularly favourable to the category of watches priced at between 200 and 500 francs (export price). They progressed by just under 40% in terms both of value and in the number of pieces. The trend of the other price segments was close to the average, but slightly less marked for timepieces costing less than 200 francs.
The main markets for the Swiss watch industry achieved better than average growth in October. Reflecting the particularly dynamic economy of the region, Hong Kong continued to achieve a sustained rate of growth. Performance in the United States has fluctuated since the beginning of the year, but was good in October. France proved to be one of the most attractive markets in Europe for Swiss watchmakers. The sustained advance in China continued, with annual growth stabilizing at a high level. Performance in Japan was average for the branch.
