Jaeger LeCoultre History

Jaeger-LeCoultre is about more than 200 patents and 1000 different movements.
“ La Grande Maison ” is today one of the most famous watchmaking house in the world.
A past full of inventions and a promising future make Jaeger-LeCoultre an irrefutable in the history of watchmaking.

After the invention of a machine that produces watchmaking pinions, Antoine LeCoultre (1803-1881) founded his first workshop in 1833. In 1844, the firm produced the most accurate instrument in the world: the Millionometer, which measures microns.

In 1847 Antoine LeCoultre created a revolutionary system which eliminated the need for keys to rewind and set watches. A push-piece activated a lever to change from one function to another.
In 1851 at the Universal Exhibition, Antoine Lecoultre was awarded a gold medal in recognition of his collective works.
In 1866, Antoine LeCoultre and his son Elie, who entered the firm at the age of 16 , decided to found the first manufacture of the Vallée de Joux. Henceforth under a same roof were gathered the whole know-how of watchmaking. The factory inherited the nickname “ La Grande Maison ”. This work method has permitted many creations.
In 1877, the founder decided to give his shares to his three sons.
In 1900 Jacques-David LeCoultre, the son of Elie LeCoultre became the manager of the house.

The name Jaeger-LeCoultre is the result of the co-operation between two men. In 1903, Edmond Jaeger, watchmaker of the French navy ,challenged Jacques-David LeCoultre to produce ultra-thin calibers. The founder’s grandson took up the challenge and created the Caliber 145 with 1,38mm of thickness in 1907.
In 1928 the factory produced the Clock Atmos, designed by Jean-Léon Reutter. With its temperature sensitiveness the clock rewinding is almost perpetual.
Descended of the Duoplan, the Caliber 101 created in 1929 is the smallest movement of the world and weight 1 gram.

The model Réverso with its famous reversal system was created in 1931 to be shockproof during the polo competitions. Useful and aesthetic it became an icon of the art déco.
Finally in 1937 the factory took the name of Jaeger-Lecoultre, the union of the two houses has given birth to arectangular perpetual calendar wristwatch.
Jacques-David LeCoultre died in 1948.
Created in 1950 the Memovox line gave birth in 1956 to the first automatic alarm watch, it is made with the Caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 815. Followed by the model Geophysic, anti-magnetic watch equipped with the caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 478b and the model Geomatic chronometer.

Far from having exhausted its watchmaking revolutions, the years that followed were a race to the thinnest caliber. The house created in 1962 the caliber 838 with a thickness of 1,85 mm. In 1981 the caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 606 with day and second was created, followed by the caliber 601 with a thickness of 1,8 mm, and finally the Caliber 608 in 1982 with a thickness of 1,6 mm.

The quest for perfection gave birth in 1992 to the Control 1000 hours which particularity is the set up of series of tests which has become a reference of reliability.

In 2004, a real revolution hit the watchmaking universe with the creation of the Gyrotourbillon 1, built with the Caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 177, the watch is associated to a running equation of time and a perpetual calendar.

In 2006 the Reverso grande complication à triptyque with a total of 19 complications was built with the Caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 175 and united the time under a three-dimensional shapes: the civil time, the sidereal time and the perpetual time.

In 2007 the Master Compressor Extreme LAB was the first movement without oil nor grease, built with the Caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 988C, it captured more than ever the futuristic vision of the legendary maison horlogère Jaeger-Lecoultre .
