Edox’s story began back in 1883 with a simple love story. Christian Rüfli-Flury, then an exceptionally gifted watchmaker in Granges, decided to give his wife, Eva-Maria, a pocket watch that he had designed himself for her 25th birthday. Touched and impressed by the beauty of her gift, Eva-Maria then persuaded her husband to found his own watchmaking company in 1884. He named the company “Edox”. The name Edox means “hour” in ancient Greek, and the hourglass logo has adorned all Edox watches ever since.

The 125 years of Edox’s existence have been studded with success and horological inventions, some of which remain unrivalled even to this day.
In 1921, after the death of the founder, the company’s decision to produce a collection of wrist-watches marked a turning point in the history of Swiss watchmaking. The Edox pocket watch was gradually discontinued.
Edox became the benchmark brand for water resistance with the launch in 1961 of its Delfin model, a revolutionary timepiece that was water-resistant to 200 metres on account of the double crown gasket, the double case-back and the special shock-proofing.
Edox’s innovative momentum continued in 1965, with the launch of the Hydrosub, a model that was water-resistant to 500 metres.
In 1983, in the face of the watchmaking crisis, Victor Strambini took over Edox and decided to base the company in Les Genevez, in the heart of the Swiss Jura.
Later, in 1988, Edox achieved major success with the famous Les Bémonts Ultra Slim, their ultra-slim calendar watch featuring a movement that was scarcely 1.4 mm thick. This world record for the slimmest calendar watch remains unbroken to this day.
In 2006, Edox launched a collection of sports watches, water-resistant to 500 metres and incorporating materials derived from aerospace research, such as titanium, carbon and ceramic.

Edox’s passion for technical perfection quite naturally led the company into the world of nautical sports, initially involving luxury boats, and later powerboats.
In November 2006, Edox became official timekeeper for the Class-1 Powerboat World Championships, the famous Formula 1 of the seas, a partnership which has just been renewed for a further season. The two crews of the Team Qatar boats wear Edox’s Class-1 models on their wrists.
Edox became further involved in sports sponsorship in 2008 by becoming official timekeeper for the famous Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) and featuring their name on the Sea Dubai, the 44-foot yacht designed by Russell Coutts. This boat is signed up to take part in the RC44 championships in preparation for qualifying for the 33rd America’s Cup.
The crew of the Sea Dubai and Edox have several points in common: the ambition to feature among the best in their category and the promotion of precision, perfection and performance.
A fitting association for the Jura-based watchmakers whose ultimate goal is to rank among the three foremost Swiss watchmaking brands in the €400 to €3,000 market segment.
Since their beginnings, Edox have had a very clear vision of their growth and development thanks to their innovative ideas and ceaseless design research, while at the same time maintaining the classic traditions of watchmaking know-how. Edox has thus become a benchmark brand in timekeeping for nautical sports competitions.
Elegance, dynamism and technical innovation have represented the Edox philosophy for 125 years.
