Forever linked to the Eterna brand name, the name Kon-Tiki, that of an Inca sun-god, recalls the seafaring adventure of Thor Heyerdahl and his crew. In 1947, he and his companions sailed for 101 days and nights aboard a primitive balsawood raft from the cost of Peru to the Raroia atoll in Polynesia in a bid to demonstrate the possibility of the settlement of Polynesia from South America rather than from Asia. All aboard wore an Eterna wristwatch that performed flawlessly throughout their extraordinary adventure.
In 2011, the Eterna KonTiki collection returns to its roots with a reaffirmation of its original spirit and signature style. All models feature a self-winding mechanical movement fitted in a polished and satin-finished stainless steel case. A black or a white dial or even – new this year – a blue dial displays the now-classic compass-point triangles found on the very first 1958 Eterna KonTiki. Positioned at 3, 6, 9 and 12 on the dial, together with the partly luminous hour, minute and seconds hand they offer a practical way of reading the time in low light or underwater.
As it stands today, the Eterna KonTiki collection features a balanced selection of men’s and women’s watches: the KonTiki Four-Hands XXL, with the date shown by a pointer, the KonTiki Chronograph and the KonTiki Date with a date-calendar aperture between 4 and 5 o’clock.
The KonTiki Date – inspired by the original
Designed as a stylish reminder of the 1947 adventure of the Kon-Tiki raft and its crew, today’s KonTiki Date model comes fitted with the Sellita SW 200 self-winding movement. It delivers 28,800 v.p.h. (4 Hz) and provides 38 hours of reserve power.
The screw-locked back of its 42 mm case, water-resistant to 200 metres (656 feet, 20 bar) features a medallion of the Kon-Tiki raft. Black, white or ocean blue, the dial centre carries the outline of the Raroia atoll, where the Kon-Tiki’s voyage came to an end. To its exceptional watertightness and legibility it now adds a black rubber strap matching the black-dial model or a blue rubber strap, fitted on the white-dial and blue-dial versions.
A perfect compromise between all-round elegance and uncompromising sturdiness, the KonTiki Date will appeal to active, self-assured people happily piloting their lives in today’s wide-open world.
