Few weeks before the beginning of BaselWorld, the most awaited Watch and Jewelery event of the year, it would be interesting to have a close look at its history, in order to understand all its evolution and aura.
Beyond its prestigious atmosphere, this show introduces all the innovations of the Watch and Jewelry sectors. Proof of its importance, the show is also the one that watchmaking houses dedicated their latest pieces to.
The origins of Baselworld show find their trace back in 1917. On that year, during the Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (also called MUBA), the watchmaking and jewelery sectors were created. Victim of its growing success, it had to be expanded. Therefore in 1931 during the MUBA show, an independent pavilion to this sector was added.
Let us note that until 1973, date on which the «European Watch and Jewelery event» was created, only swiss exhibitors were allowed to participate to this event.
From that date Swiss, French, Italian, German and English companies were allowed to intend to this event and take advantage of what it offers in terms of prestige, public recognition, and acknowledgment, but also in terms of the opportunity given to Watch and Jewelry brands to present their latest creations. With the increasing success and the internationalization of the target clients, the show changed its name in 1986 to «Basel 86» and allowed non-European exhibitors to be presented.
The show arouses interest and attracts more and more people, therefore in 1999 it was expanded once again. The Hall 1 was born, and added 36 000m² to the initial surface. Three additional floors are now added in order to welcome new exhibitors.
In 2003, the prestigious show changes its name to current «BaselWorld, The Watch and Jewelery Show». It corresponds more to its international character, and to its status as the leader in the domain of Watch event.
One year later, a new hall was added («Hall of Universe») to welcome international pavilions. BaselWorld is from now built on a surface of 160 000m², and welcomes during that year over 89 000 visitors.
In 2007, the show scored another spectacular record of visits: 101 700 visitors coming from 100 countries were welcome during this edition.
Thus, it has become public recognition that BaselWorld is the yearly event not to miss for any reason. For it 38th edition, «BaselWorld 2010» will open its door from March 18th – 25th, 2010.
